Your Forgotten Yelp Page May Be the Star Rating Homeowners See in ChatGPT: What Home Service Companies Should Fix

TL;DR

  • ChatGPT often shows a Yelp star rating on the map cards in its local answers, even when the written answer never names Yelp. In one 2026 study, 34% of ChatGPT's rated map cards linked to Yelp, and 46.4% in the U.S.
  • For the same business in the same city, ChatGPT's Yelp-sourced cards averaged 4.3 stars against 4.9 on Google AI Mode. For businesses with five or fewer reviews, ChatGPT showed Yelp's rating 71% of the time.
  • Don't ask customers for Yelp reviews. Yelp's software screens out reviews it thinks were requested, and those reviews don't count toward your star rating.
  • Yelp's Request a Quote button now shows in ChatGPT for some businesses, and those requests land in your Yelp inbox. Name someone to check it and reply fast.
  • Search your company in ChatGPT, claim your free Yelp page, match it to your Google profile, and answer your 20 most recent reviews. Then send me a message, and I'll run your company through ChatGPT and send you what it says.

Yelp, ChatGPT, and Home Services Companies

ChatGPT may be showing your customers a rating you've never seen.

Say you run the office at an eight-person HVAC, plumbing, and electrical company. You keep the Google Business Profile tidy. You haven't logged in to Yelp since your techs carried flip phones. In July 2026, Yelp started licensing its content to OpenAI, and that changes the math on Yelp, ChatGPT, and home services marketing. The Yelp page you wrote off may now be the star rating a homeowner sees in ChatGPT.

If you're among the home services business owners who haven't checked, you're not alone. This post covers what changed, what a homeowner actually sees, and what to fix first.

One limit up front: nobody can promise you a spot in ChatGPT's answers, and this post won't pretend otherwise. What you can control is the listing it reads.

What Changed Between Yelp and ChatGPT in 2026?

As reported by Axios, Yelp began licensing its reviews, photos, and business information to OpenAI in July 2026. ChatGPT can now pull Yelp's page about your company into a local answer, with ratings and details attached. Yelp's branding and links travel with that content, and the deal leaves Yelp free to sign with other AI companies.

Search Engine Land noted that OpenAI controls how the experience looks and that the financial terms weren't disclosed. ChatGPT also isn't Yelp's only outlet. "With Yelp's local content and task completion features, platforms like ChatGPT, Apple Maps, Amazon's Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo!, leading automotive brands, and more, are delivering Yelp-powered recommendations and helping people make reservations, join a waitlist and request quotes from service providers." (Source: Yelp)

PPC Land reported that Yelp also supplies the local pros behind Amazon's Sponsored Services ads, launched Sept. 29, 2026, so Yelp is turning into a channel into both ChatGPT and Amazon. I'll cover the Amazon side in a follow-up post on Oct. 20.

Is Yelp's Request a Quote Button Live in ChatGPT?

Yes, at least for some businesses, based on the latest source we have (Sept. 9, 2026). Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on Sept. 9, 2026, said, "Just recently, also there was a quote button, a Request a Quote button that taps into our Request a Quote system, showing up on relevant results within ChatGPT."

That's a step past July, when the first coverage said quote requests were still on the way. IgniteLocal reported in August 2026 that independent testing found the button live "for some service businesses," and noted that availability varies. One more wrinkle: Yelp's developer documentation still labels its Request a Quote API as beta. Yelp hasn't said the button shows for every business or trade, so check your own listing before you count on it.

Why Does Yelp in ChatGPT Hit Home Services Companies Hardest?

ChatGPT leans heavily on directories for home services questions. Based on findings from Cheers, 84% of ChatGPT's home services answers collected Aug. 31 to Sept. 20, 2026, cited at least one directory, review platform, or "best of" list. Your website is one source among many.

Greg Sterling, with Near Media, found the same pattern in December 2025. Law firm websites were usually the source in legal answers. "However, in other categories such as Home Services or Restaurants, third party sources/directories were more common."

Cheers data shows that Expertise.com appeared in 32.1% of ChatGPT's home services answers and Angi or HomeAdvisor in 29.4%. Yelp showed up as a cited source in just 0.6%. That last number is where most owners stop reading, and it's the wrong place to stop.

Why a 0.6% Citation Rate Still Puts Yelp in Front of Homeowners

Yelp plays two different roles in ChatGPT. It rarely gets named in the written answer, but it often supplies the star rating a homeowner sees on the map. Cheers analysis highlights that 34% of the rated business cards on ChatGPT's map linked to Yelp, and 46.4% in the U.S. alone.

A second study backs that up. Research by Complete SEO shows that among businesses listed on both Yelp and Google, the star rating and review count on ChatGPT's card matched Yelp's 48% to 54% of the time and Google's 26% to 41%. Think of the written answer as the headline and the map card as the price tag. Homeowners look at both.

"But nobody uses Yelp anymore." I hear that a lot, and I get it. Your phone hasn't rung off a Yelp lead in years. The catch is that your customers don't have to open Yelp for Yelp to matter. ChatGPT opens it for them.

What Does a Homeowner See When They Ask ChatGPT for AC Repair?

A homeowner who asks ChatGPT for the best AC repair nearby usually gets a short list of companies with a map, star ratings, and review counts. In a September 2026 study, Complete SEO found a places card on 95% of ChatGPT's answers to "best plumber in Austin" style questions. For some service businesses, a quote button sits right there too.

Here's the part that stings. Evidence from Cheers points to a ratings gap: for the same business in the same city, ChatGPT's Yelp-sourced cards averaged 4.3 stars against 4.9 on Google AI Mode. Of every ChatGPT answer that showed any business under 4.0 stars, 98% (617 of 630) involved a Yelp card.

Your review count changes the odds. Complete SEO researchers determined that for businesses with five or fewer reviews, ChatGPT showed Yelp's rating 71% of the time and Google's 15%. Above 100 reviews, the split flipped to 30% Google and 22% Yelp. If your review history is thin, your forgotten Yelp page is doing most of the talking.

Don't expect the same list twice, either. Complete SEO data shows that the same question asked minutes apart returned an identical list of businesses only 3.6% of the time. ChatGPT works more like a dice roll from a known pool than a fixed ranking, so the goal is to be in the pool with a listing that holds up. Our guide to how home service companies show up in AI search covers the wider signals.

How Do You Show Up in ChatGPT Local Results Through Yelp?

You can't force your way into ChatGPT's answers, but you can fix the Yelp page it reads. Claim the page, match it to your Google Business Profile, swap in real job photos, and answer your recent reviews. None of it costs money, because Yelp says claiming a business page is free.

Before You Do Anything, Run This Checklist

Get a baseline before you change a thing, so you can tell later what moved:

  • Ask ChatGPT for the best HVAC company, plumber, or electrician in your town
  • Ask it about your company by name
  • Screenshot every answer, including the star rating on your card and where it links
  • Ask the same question again a few minutes later and screenshot that too
  • Write your Google rating and review count next to your Yelp rating and count

Claim Your Yelp Page and Match It to Your Google Profile

Your company may already have a Yelp page you didn't create. Yelp lets customers add a business, and its support center notes that a claimed page "may be updated to show as being unclaimed after a period of inactivity by the business owner." (Source: Yelp)

Claim it, then match your business name, address, phone number, hours, and service area to your Google profile, word for word. If Google says you close at 5 p.m. and Yelp says 6 p.m., you've handed ChatGPT two answers and let it pick. Our post on citation consistency explains why matching details matter so much in local search.

Swap Stock Photos for Real Job and Crew Photos

ChatGPT may borrow photos from wherever it finds them. When Near Media asked ChatGPT to explain the markup behind its business panels, ChatGPT said images "are pulled opportunistically from third-party sites such as Yelp, LoopNet, Wikipedia, and the firm's own website." (Source: Near Media) Near Media didn't verify that account, so treat it as a clue, not a rule.

Delete the blurry storefront shot and the van you sold years ago. Upload real install photos and your crew in uniform. A homeowner deciding who to let into the house wants to see who's coming.

Answer Your Last 20 Yelp Reviews

Start with the 20 most recent reviews, good and bad. A calm, specific reply to a complaint tells a skeptical reader more than another five-star review. Our post on running reviews like a lead channel shows how to make that routine. Yelp stated, "we encourage businesses to remain engaged with customers by publicly responding to reviews and directly interacting with audiences."

Follow Yelp's Rules Before You Ask for Reviews

Yelp is strict here, and it's different from what you may do elsewhere. According to Yelp's "Don't Ask for Reviews" policy, you shouldn't ask anyone to review your business, run staff contests for reviews, ask for reviews after a survey or contact form, or offer discounts or freebies in exchange.

Yelp's software also screens out reviews it thinks were requested. Reviews it doesn't recommend "don't factor into the business's overall star rating or review count," so a review push can leave your rating right where it was. (Source: Yelp) Yelp's own advice is to give people a great experience "without any expectation or encouragement of a review in return."

Check the Other Directories AI Tools Pull From

Yelp isn't the only directory feeding AI answers. In a study by BrightLocal of 166,499 citations for service businesses across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and ChatGPT in 2026, these sources led the way:

Source
Share of citations

Google
45%
Yelp
12.3%
Facebook
4.4%
BBB
1.6%
Angi's List
1.4%
MapQuest
1.2%

Check your BBB profile, Facebook page, MapQuest listing, and any trade association directory you belong to. Our guide to common business listing mistakes covers the usual errors, and why citation building matters covers the rest.

A Yelp Cleanup Afternoon at an Eight-Person Shop

Picture an eight-person HVAC and plumbing company covering one county. It has about 70 Google reviews at 4.8 stars. Its unclaimed Yelp page has six reviews averaging 3.5, two of them about a missed appointment. Yelp still lists Saturday hours the company dropped years ago.

The office manager blocks off one afternoon to screenshot what ChatGPT shows, claim the Yelp page, fix the hours, upload 15 job photos, and reply to all six reviews. None of that guarantees ChatGPT names the company next week. But with only six Yelp reviews, that Yelp rating is the one most likely to show on the card. Now it sits next to correct hours, real photos, and a company that answers complaints.

Who Answers When a Yelp Quote Request Comes Through ChatGPT?

Someone at your company needs to own Yelp quote requests before they arrive. A homeowner who taps the quote button in ChatGPT sends the request through Yelp, not your website form or phone line. Yelp lists replying to "messages or quote requests from potential customers" as a claimed-page tool, so that's where the lead lands.

Speed matters because the homeowner may not be asking only you. At the same conference, Stoppelman described the quote flow in Yelp Assistant, Yelp's own AI chat tool, which runs on the same Request a Quote system as the ChatGPT button: "It says, 'Okay, I'm going to send this out to get multiple quotes.'" Decide now who checks Yelp and how fast they reply. A lead in an inbox nobody opens is a missed call with extra steps. Our post on getting more booked appointments shows why reply speed matters as much as lead volume.

Spend One Afternoon on the Listing ChatGPT Reads

Yelp's deal with OpenAI turned a listing most home services companies ignored into the rating a homeowner may see in ChatGPT. Check what ChatGPT says about you first. Then claim your Yelp page, match it to Google, replace old photos, and answer recent reviews.

If you want to know what ChatGPT tells homeowners about your company, send me a message. I'll run your company through ChatGPT and send you what it says. It's free, and there's no pitch attached.
