Two calls in every thousand now come from AI search.
That's the honest headline on AI search phone calls for pest control companies and every other business with a phone. If you're the owner or office manager at a pest control company with five to 50 people, it probably sounds like a rounding error. Fair enough. It's small, and AI isn't a major lead source for anyone yet.
Here's the turn. CallRail's AI call index found that the share of calls from AI search grew 178% between November 2025 and August 2026. Home Services, the category pest control falls under, ran about 1.8 times the all-industry rate. I heard CallRail walk through this trend at MAICON 2026 in Cleveland in October, and every CallRail figure here comes from CallRail's published pages.
These callers asked ChatGPT who to call, and then they called. Unless your reports are set up for it, you can't tell them apart, and that's how pest control companies end up cutting the work that earned the call. This post covers how to spot those calls, what those callers need when they get through, and the one Cloudflare setting that can quietly cut them off.
What Did CallRail Find About AI Search Phone Calls?
CallRail's call index found that 0.203% of inbound calls in August 2026 came from AI search, across more than 30 million calls. That's 178% higher than November 2025, when 0.073% did. Home Services ranked third of all industries at 0.360%, and ChatGPT sent the vast bulk of the AI-attributed calls.
July 2026 was the first month above the 0.20% line. Data from CallRail shows July at 0.216%, with August holding above 0.20% for a second month in a row.
| Month | AI Call Share |
|---|---|
| Nov. 2025 | 0.073% |
| July 2026 | 0.216% |
| Aug. 2026 | 0.203% |

Which Industries Get the Most AI-Referred Calls?
Manufacturing led AI-referred calls in August, and Home Services ranked third, behind Travel and Hospitality. The August industry breakdown, as reported by CallRail, put all five leaders above the 0.203% average:
| Industry | AI Call Share |
|---|---|
| Manufacturing | 0.499% |
| Travel and Hospitality | 0.383% |
| Home Services | 0.360% |
| Retail | 0.314% |
| Legal | 0.238% |
| All industries | 0.203% |
Home Services moves fast, too. CallRail's index puts the category at 0.176% in June 2026, so it climbed to 0.360% in two months. That's the broad home services group, not pest control alone, but your company sits inside it.
Which AI Tools Send the Calls?
ChatGPT sends almost all AI-referred calls. CallRail data indicates that ChatGPT accounted for 95.27% of AI-attributed calls in August. Perplexity was 2.73%, up 62% from July, and Claude was 1.99%. If you're going to test how AI tools describe your company, start with ChatGPT.
Is a Fraction of a Percent Worth Your Time?
A fraction of a percent is worth watching, even if it isn't worth panic. Here's the fair objection: at the Home Services rate, an office that takes 1,000 calls a month would see three or four from AI search. You have bigger fires, and I won't pretend otherwise.
But the rate of AI calls isn't the point. The direction is, and so is what you can't see. It's like the first few termite swarmers on a windowsill in February. Nobody calls it an infestation. Nobody ignores it either. If your reports can't see AI calls, you'll undercount them, and you can't defend work you can't measure. For the bigger picture on how AI answers and map results differ, see how local SEO and GEO compare.
Why Do AI-Referred Callers Act Differently From Other Leads?
AI-referred callers often skip your website and dial. They asked an AI who to call, got a name, and picked up the phone. CallRail reported that "Callers skip the browsing phase and dial immediately," that "Customers asking AI who to call are already prepared to buy," and that "The phone call often becomes the first meaningful interaction."
Read that last line again as an office manager. This customer's first contact with your company is the moment your CSR says hello. The AI did the shopping.
CallRail calls these "early signals," and the label matters. The report has no close-rate data. Nobody has shown that AI callers close better than a Google caller, so don't let anyone sell you that. What the data does say is that the call is often your first real shot.
Why AI Callers Show Up as Direct or Branded Search
AI-referred leads often get credited to the wrong source, because ChatGPT doesn't leave a door hanger. Develomark, a CallRail agency partner, wrote in a Develomark guest post that the early numbers "undercount AI's real influence."
The Develomark post explained that customers often get a recommendation in an AI tool, then "Google the company name or go to the site directly." Your reports give that call to branded or direct search, even though ChatGPT made the introduction.
How Do You Track AI Referral Traffic in GA4 and Your Call Logs?
You track AI referral traffic three ways: the AI Assistant channel in GA4, AI source tags in your call tracking, and a "How did you hear about us?" question on every call and form. Each one catches a different slice. None catches all of it, because some AI callers never touch your website at all.
Check the GA4 AI Assistant Channel
GA4 now has an AI Assistant channel in its default channel group. Google's GA4 help page describes it as "the channel by which users arrive at your site from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode." Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode still count as Organic Search.
To find it, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Set the date range to the last 90 days and look for the AI Assistant row. Keep one limit in mind: GA4 only sees website visits. A caller who got your number from an AI answer and dialed it won't show up there.
Want your own grouping? Google's custom channel groups guide includes an AI assistants example. Google notes that traffic lands in the first channel it matches, so the order of your channels matters. For most pest companies, the default AI Assistant channel is enough.
Tag AI Sources in Your Call Tracking
Website call tracking swaps the number on your site based on where each visitor came from. Check whether your tool reports ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI tools as their own sources or folds them into Referral and Direct. If you already use call tracking to see whether your SEO is actually working, this is the same report with one more filter.
Call tracking has the same blind spot as GA4. It catches AI visitors who browse your site and then call. It can't tag a caller who never visited.
Ask "How Did You Hear About Us?" Every Time
The cheapest tracking tool is a question. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an answer choice on every web form, and add the question to your CSR's call script. Develomark noted in its guide to call data and AI search, "We already see this in calls and forms where people mention they found the business through ChatGPT."
Log an AI answer the same way you'd log a referral from a neighbor. After a quarter, those notes tell you more than any single percentage.
What Do AI-Referred Callers Need When They Get Through?
AI-referred callers need someone to pick up. The caller asked an AI for a good pest control company and got your name, so the choice is made. If the phone rings out, the next name in that answer is one tap away. In a CallRail survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers, 78% said they've abandoned a business after an unanswered call.
The same survey shows how little patience callers say they have. CallRail's survey results show that 82% of consumers say they'll call a competitor if you don't answer, and 21% say they immediately call another business. Only 42% say they leave a voicemail.
Hold time hurts too. Based on findings from CallRail's consumer survey, 41% of consumers say they hang up after 1 to 2 minutes on hold. Those are things people say in a vendor survey, not measured behavior, but any office manager who's checked a voicemail box on Monday morning knows the pattern.
You don't need a new playbook for this. If evenings and weekends are the gap, start with after-hours answering options. If calls get answered but don't turn into booked jobs, tighten your phone-to-close workflow.
What CallRail Says AI-Driven Discovery Takes
CallRail's own list reads like a pest control office checklist. Its December 2025 call analysis names four requirements:
- Accurate online hours and consistent NAP (name, address, and phone) data
- Clear, structured service descriptions that AI can read
- Fast response times and fewer missed calls
- After-hours coverage for time-sensitive inquiries
None of that is new advice. Start with consistent NAP data. Then check the hours on your Google Business Profile. AI search just raises the price of skipping it. For how homeowners actually use these tools to pick a company, see how homeowners search with ChatGPT.
Could Cloudflare's AI Bot Block Cut Off Your ChatGPT Calls?
Yes, if the wrong control is set to Block. In Cloudflare's AI bot policies, a Block on Search or Agent can stop the crawlers that put your company in ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."
Bot settings are easy to say yes to without a second look. At Cube, we've found client sites with Cloudflare's old "Block AI bots" switch turned on, and we turned it off. The label invites a quick yes. Blocking AI search by accident is like locking the front door and then wondering why the doorbell never rings.
How Cloudflare Sorts AI Crawlers Now
Cloudflare now sorts AI crawlers by what they do: Search, Agent, and Training. Cloudflare's bot documentation says each one can be set to Block, Block on pages with ads, or Allow, under Security Settings and Configure AI bot policies. The same page lists the old one-switch "Block AI bots" setting as deprecating on Sept. 15, 2026.
Blocking AI training and blocking AI search are separate choices. OpenAI's documentation says its settings are independent, so a site can allow OAI-SearchBot to show up in search results while disallowing GPTBot, its training crawler.
One more catch arrived with the Sept. 15 change. Cloudflare's announcement says Block on Training now also stops mixed-use crawlers, including Googlebot, Bingbot, and Applebot, "so either setting impacts search as well as training." Cloudflare's advice: "To stop training and keep search, use Disallow AI Training."
The 3-Step Cloudflare Check
If your website runs through Cloudflare, this check takes about five minutes:
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, open Security Settings and find Configure AI bot policies.
- Make sure Search and Agent aren't set to Block.
- Look at Training. If it says Block, change it to Disallow AI Training, or to Allow if you don't mind training.
If your site isn't on Cloudflare, ask whoever manages it to check your robots.txt file for a rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot.
What an AI Call Check Turns Up at a 15-Tech Company
Picture the office manager at a 15-tech company with a small commercial division. The owner asks one question at the quarterly meeting: "Is any of this AI stuff sending us work?" Nobody has an answer, because nobody has looked.
GA4 shows a thin AI Assistant row over 90 days, almost all of it from ChatGPT. The call tracking report files those visits under Referral, so the office manager adds a filter. The web form gets a new "ChatGPT or another AI tool" choice, and the CSRs get one new line in the script.
The Cloudflare check turns up nothing, which is a fine result. A quarter later, the owner gets a real answer: a small number of calls, a few callers who said "ChatGPT," and a clear baseline to watch. That won't double the lead count. It does replace a guess with a number.
What Should You Check This Week?
Five checks cover the basics, and none of them needs a new tool. Together they tell you whether AI search is sending you calls, whether you can see them, and whether a security setting is shutting the door on them.
- Pull the GA4 AI Assistant channel for the last 90 days
- Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" to your "How did you hear about us?" choices on forms and in the call script
- Check how your call tracking labels visits from ChatGPT and Perplexity
- Open your Cloudflare AI bot policies and confirm Search and Agent aren't set to Block
- Call your own main line at 6 p.m. on a Friday and see who picks up
When those are done, read your call transcripts. Develomark's point in its AI search call tracking guide is that transcripts hold the exact questions customers ask, and those are the questions AI assistants answer.
Make Sure ChatGPT Can Find You and Your Phone Gets Answered
AI search calls are still a sliver of your phone volume, and nobody should tell you otherwise. But that sliver is growing fast, Home Services sits near the top of the chart, and these callers have already picked you before they dial. The work is simple: see them, answer them, and don't block them by accident.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on your GA4, call tracking, and Cloudflare settings for AI traffic, send me a message. I'll check all three and send back what I find. No pitch, no contract.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Calls Does ChatGPT Send to Home Service Businesses?
In August 2026, CallRail found that 0.360% of inbound calls to Home Services businesses came from AI search, about 1.8 times the all-industry rate of 0.203%. ChatGPT accounted for 95.27% of AI-attributed calls across all industries that month. It's still a small share, about three or four calls in every 1,000 at the Home Services average.
How Can I Tell If a Caller Found Us Through ChatGPT?
Ask them. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as a choice on your "How did you hear about us?" question, on every web form and in your CSR's call script. GA4 shows AI visits to your site, and call tracking catches visitors who browse and then call. Neither can tag a caller who never visited, so the question is how you catch those calls.
How Do I See ChatGPT Traffic in Google Analytics?
Use the AI Assistant channel in GA4's default channel group. Google says it covers visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok, and it excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which count as Organic Search. Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the range to the last 90 days.
Does Blocking AI Bots in Cloudflare Hurt My Visibility in ChatGPT?
It can. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. In Cloudflare's AI bot policies, make sure Search and Agent aren't set to Block. Blocking training is a separate choice, but use Disallow AI Training rather than Block, because since Sept. 15, 2026, Block on Training also stops Googlebot, Bingbot, and Applebot.
Should I Worry About AI Calls If They're Under 1% of My Calls?
Watch them rather than worry. The share is small, but CallRail's data shows it grew 178% between November 2025 and August 2026, and Home Services runs about 1.8 times the average. The real count is likely higher, because callers who look up your name after asking ChatGPT get credited to branded or direct search.
