There's a prevailing narrative that AI-produced content is inherently generic, low-quality, and detrimental to the digital landscape. This perspective, frankly, misses the mark. It's akin to blaming a paintbrush for a bad painting; the issue isn't the tool itself, but its misuse or the lack of skill of the person wielding it. When done right, AI-driven content is not just good, it’s actively improving the internet and, by extension, making us better off.
The Misconception: Generic AI is Bad AI
The common complaint about "generic" or "low-quality" AI content is a red herring. It’s not a flaw of AI, but a symptom of poor implementation. Think about it: if I, Nick Jain, with my background in theoretical math and physics, tried to paint a masterpiece, the result would likely be, charitably, abstract. Does that mean paintbrushes are low quality, or that painting as an art form is inherently generic? Of course not. It means a powerful tool was in the hands of an amateur. The same logic applies to AI. Many unprofessionals use generic tools badly, yielding generic results. This isn’t a indictment of AI itself, but of the current skill deficit in leveraging its true potential.
The True State of Internet Content: A Baseline of Mediocrity
Let's be direct: the average quality of content across the internet, regardless of its origin, is often subpar. The vast majority of human-produced articles, videos, and artistic endeavors are, to be blunt, generic. Take fantasy art on platforms like DeviantArt – while I love the genre, 90% of it adheres to a very similar "dark fantasy" aesthetic, making much of it functionally generic. This isn't a knock on human creativity, but an acknowledgment of a statistical reality. AI, when expertly applied, offers a path to significantly elevate this baseline.
Three Core Benefits of Well-Executed AI Content
Quality AI-produced content doesn't just fill a void; it profoundly benefits the digital ecosystem and human endeavor in three critical ways.
Elevating the Average and Median Quality of Content
First, AI will dramatically raise the average and median quality of content available online. Consider a non-native English speaker with a groundbreaking idea or critical insight. Previously, language barriers might have resulted in an article that, while conceptually brilliant, was poorly written and difficult to read. With AI, that same individual can now articulate their ideas with clarity and precision, producing high-quality articles that convey their expertise effectively. This democratizes high-quality expression, making valuable information accessible irrespective of linguistic fluency. My own company, Content Hurricane, is built on this very premise – providing AI trained to produce expert-level content, thereby increasing inbound leads by 142% for our alpha testers.
Unlocking Latent Human Creativity
Second, AI acts as a powerful catalyst, unlocking the creativity of individuals who previously lacked the technical skills, resources, or wealth to bring their visions to fruition. I've often had ideas for intricate armor sets in video games like Dark Souls, but my lack of drawing or Photoshop skills meant these concepts remained confined to my imagination. Now, with AI art tools, I can iterate and visualize these designs in ways previously impossible. Similarly, a solo woman director with a compelling script can now bypass the daunting task of raising $500,000 for actors, sets, and production teams. AI-driven tools can help her create high-fidelity visual elements, character models, and even entire virtual environments, transforming her vision into a film with unprecedented efficiency and accessibility. This is about empowerment; removing the technical and financial gatekeepers to creative expression.
Fostering Orthogonal Creativity
Third, and perhaps most fascinating, AI is capable of orthogonal creativity – forms of expression that fundamentally differ from most human creative processes. While human creativity often builds on existing paradigms, AI can generate novel patterns, unexpected juxtapositions, and entirely new stylistic approaches that are difficult for the human mind to conceive independently. This isn't just about efficiency; it's about expanding the very definition of what's possible in creative output, leading to genuinely innovative and unpredictable forms of content that enrich our collective cultural landscape.
The Path Forward
The hand-wringing over AI-generated content is misplaced. The real conversation should be about how we leverage these powerful tools to enhance, not diminish, the quality and accessibility of information and art. When deployed with expertise and a clear understanding of its capabilities, AI doesn't just automate; it elevates. It promises a future where the internet is not just larger, but demonstrably better, serving as a platform for more diverse, higher-quality, and profoundly creative content. This is not a threat to human ingenuity, but a profound amplification of it. It’s an opportunity we cannot afford to squander.
There are great tools out there, but you need to differentiate between foundational models and easier to user “wrappers”
There are two approaches people can taking AI to using content.
First, you can either start with what’s called foundational models (i.e. chatgpt, gemini, anthropic) and then use prompt engineering to build something. The benefit to this approach is maximum creative flexibility since you aren’t adding any layers between you and the model. THe problem is that this requires a lot of iterations, you’ll probably be “re-inventing the wheel” for solving prompting problems or classic pitfalls others have solve, and waste a lot of AI tokens (which you have to pay for) as you iterate.
The second approach is paying for “wrappers”, i.e., a tool that someone has built on top of a general purpose foundational model to do one thing really well. For example, Content Hurricane is focussed solely on writing great blogs (i.e., not videos, social media, birthday cards, etc.. So while you lose the flexibility of using chat gpt to make anything from images to wedding invitations to college essays, you benefit from a fit-for-purpose tool (in CH’s case, making sure the blog articles are not generic sounding, are on topic and are SEO optimized)
