How Much Does a Website Redesign or Design Cost?

When you are just starting out or looking to redo your website there are a myriad of options out there, from the do it yourself (DIY) web builders, agencies who specialize in semi-custom sites with predetermined look and powered by a content management system (CMS), agencies that build custom looks on a CMS, or one that is a one off programmed and designed.

One-Off Custom Sites

It’s beyond the scope of this post to dive into the cost of one-off custom sites; Just know that those are going to vary in complexity and will need to be managed by a large agency or in-house team. It will also more than likely be developed by the same agency or in-house team.

Do It Yourself (DIY) Website

Going the DIY route can be the “cheapest” option on the surface. Those can range anywhere from $100 to $3,000 or more.

The hidden costs comes in the time you are spending building and maintaining the website. I often tell clients, “sure you can DIY your website, but then you are taking away potentially hours from your core business or even worse doing it after hours and taking away from your family time!”

Semi-custom sites

There are many agencies that specialize in building semi-custom websites powered by a content management system (CMS) such as Joomla! or WordPress. With these, you have the ability to choose from an array of designs, but are limited to those looks. Want to change colors or the size of your logo, you may be out of luck!

A site like this might run anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand.

Custom Site on a CMS

At Cube Creative, we believe the best solution for most of our clients are to build a custom site on a CMS. We have found that this provides the best solution for most of our clients and allows us the freedom to customize a site to be as individual as their business. Prices start around $2,000 and are fully managed by our agency for the best results.

Is a website all you need?

Your website is one of the best and cheapest marketing tools you have at your disposal. You may think that a website is all you really need. Contrary to that belief, it’s just the start. You also need content to be found on the search engines.

I often tell clients, “the site can look great, but if you don’t have content that can get you found on the search engines then it doesn’t matter how good it looks.”

Depending on your competition and your industry, you may be able to have a few basic pages and a blog post per month to rank well. For others, you may need lots of pages and 3 to 5 pieces of content per week.

Content creation pricing can vary greatly depending on the quality and length of the post. We have found that outsourced content usually starts at $0.10 per word and up.

Your Best Sales Rep

I tell clients constantly their website is the cheapest and best marketing tool they have. It can also be their best sales representative, too!

Think of your website as your best sales rep that works 24/7, 365 days a year. Their only purpose in life is to talk to your customers and promote your business. They should know everything about the company like the back of his hand and can help answer prospects’ questions with a good search and a few clicks. However, they are only as smart as you allow them to be. if your website becomes old and dated or you don’t keep it updated with fresh content then they will lose the edge.

Now ask yourself what the true worth of that is to you?
